Tianjin starts citywide COVID-19 testing

Chinese mainland reports 92 locally transmitted COVID-19 cases

The Chinese mainland on Saturday reported 92 new locally transmitted COVID-19 cases.

Of the new local cases, 56 were reported in Henan, 30 in Shaanxi, three in Tianjin, two in Zhejiang, and one in Guangdong.

中国大陆星期六报告了92例新确诊的本土新冠病例。

Tianjin starts citywide COVID-19 testing

North China's Tianjin has decided¹ to start a citywide nucleic acid testing after 20 people were tested positive for COVID-19.

The infections were reported from Friday to Saturday.

Gene² sequencing found the first two locally-confirmed cases were infected with the Omicron variant³.

It is not confirmed yet whether the infections are related to the imported case of Omicron variant infection in the city.

China supports Maldives in advancing social, economic development

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi says China supports the Maldives in advancing social and economic development.

Wang made the remarks when meeting the press alongside his Maldives counterpart Abdulla Shahid, while visiting the South Asian country after his trips to Eritrea, Kenya and the Comoros.

The Chinese diplomat⁴ hailed the relationship between the two countries, calling it a model for friendly exchanges and win-win cooperation.

He says China and the Maldives are jointly⁵ constructing the Maritime⁶ Silk Road, and that serves the common interests of the two peoples.

China's first PPP high-speed railway put into operation

China's first high-speed railway controlled by private capital was put into operation on Saturday in east China's Zhejiang Province.

It is among China's first group of high-speed railway projects funded by a public-private partnership⁷, with the private sector⁸ having a holding status.

The construction of the railway began in 2017. The track-laying work was completed in June 2021.

Kazakhstan eyes post-riot restoration as situation stabilizes⁹

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has urged the restoration of administrative¹⁰ and public facilities in the largest city of Almaty and other regions as chaos¹¹ caused by days of violent protests is easing in the country.

He says the Collective Security Treaty Organization peacekeepers working in the capital city of Nur-Sultan have allowed part of Kazakhstan's law enforcement officers to redeploy to Almaty for the "counter-terrorist operation" there.

In a phone conversation on Saturday, Tokayev and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed that leaders of the CSTO member states will hold a videoconference in the next few days to discuss the unrest in Kazakhstan.

Also on Saturday, Tokayev relieved Azamat Abdymomunov, who was the deputy secretary of Kazakhstan's powerful Security Council.

Iran says disputes "decreasing" in Vienna talks

Iran's chief nuclear negotiator Ali Bagheri Kani says the disputes are decreasing in ongoing¹² Vienna talks.

Bagheri Kani made the remarks at the end of meetings between representatives of Iran and other remaining parties to the 2015 nuclear deal before leaving a hotel in Vienna, where the negotiations¹³ over Tehran's nuclear program are continuing.

Iran and the five other remaining signatories to the Iranian nuclear pact¹⁴, namely China, Russia, Britain, France and Germany, have held rounds of talks in Vienna in a bid to revive the deal.

The United States, which withdrew from the deal in 2018 under former President Donald Trump¹⁵, is indirectly¹⁶ involved in the talks.
