1. stentorian¹ /stenˈtɔ:ri:ən/

Stentor是传说中一位嗓音洪亮的传令官，其音量相当于50个人的音量。斯滕托尔（Stentor），古希腊神话男性人物之一。其事迹反映于荷马的《伊里亚特》之中，为特洛伊战争的希腊联军之传令官。凭借声音洪亮而闻名于世。其形象亦出现于古希腊学者亚里士多德之著述之中。

2. Stygian /ˈstidʒiən/

Styx是地狱里的一条河。冥河到底有几条网上的资料说法不一，我现在也不好说。本章G6提到的Lethe河是遗忘之河，这里的Styx是愤怒之河，守誓之河，G8提到的阿喀琉斯就是被母亲泡在Styx中而变得刀枪不入的（除了脚踝）。

3. tantalize³ /ˈtæntəˌlaɪz/

Tantalus因为泄露天机被罚站在阴府中，虽然又饿又渴，食物和水就近在眼前，却怎样也拿不到。坦塔洛斯（Tantalus），宙斯之子，藐视众神的权威。他烹杀了自己的儿子珀罗普斯，然后邀请众神赴宴，以考验他们是否真的通晓一切。宙斯震怒，将他打入冥界。他站在没颈的水池里，当他口渴想喝水时，水就退去；他的头上有果树，肚子饿想吃果子时，却搞不到果子，永远忍受饥渴的折磨；还说他头上悬着一块巨石，随时可以落下来把他砸死，因此永远处在恐惧之中。
