Two children have died after a house fire in Ggeelong, south west of Melbourne. Emergency services say the blaze broke out inside a room of the home this morning. Two girls, aged¹ two and three, were taken to hospital, where they were pronounced dead. A six-month-old baby who was in the parents' bedroom was unharmed.

The New South Wales criminal court of appeal has rejected an application for a retrial for the man acquitted² of carrying out the Bowraville murders. Three children died within five months of each other at an Aboriginal³ mission in the early 1990s. The court did not accept there was fresh and compelling evidence in the case.

The deputy prime minister, Michael McCormack says Malcolm Turnbull can say what he likes about Peter Dutton, but the issue over his eligibility⁴ to remain in parliament has been resolved. On twitter, Mr Turnbull called for the Home Affairs minister to be referred to the high court. Questions have been raised about Mr Dutton's eligibility to sit in parliament given his family trust had a financial interest in two government subsidised childcare centres.

Authorities across three states have launched an investigation⁵ after three contaminated punnets were found. Two brands "Berry Licious" and "Berry Obsession⁶" have been recalled.
