The US president Donald Trump³ has made a surprise Christmas visit to American troops in Iraq. It's his first trip to a conflict zone after nearly two years as president, and comes just days after he announced a withdrawal⁴ of American troops from neighboring Syria. Air Force One touched down west of Baghdad after an overnight flight from Washington, with first lady Melania Trump also on board. President Trump thanked the troops for their near elimination⁵ of the Islamic State group.

Amazon's share price soared 9.5 per cent after reporting that it achieved a "record-breaking" sales this holiday season. The local Australian share market is expected to follow the strong lead.
