The kids at Hickerson elementary simply call him Mr. James, the custodian¹ who's been a beloved² fixture³ here for two decades⁴. For his 60th, because James Anthony is deaf, the kids knew they hadto do more than just singing Happy Birthday. So they learned⁵ how to sign it. As Mr. James came in here, we did it altogether. I feel really good for I did that. Because he is so happy.

His reaction. I was very shocked. I was coming in thinking I had another mess to clean up. We were all in tears because it was just amazing when they were so excited. Born with polio, James lost his hearing as a teen, but he's found something else. It's been a moving experience seeing that class. Wow. It just shows me that I am pretty important here. A birthday wish worth a thousand words in any language.
