　　Oft I had heard of Lucy Gray: 我听说过露西·格蕾：

　　And, when I crossed the wild, 天亮时,我从野外走过时，

　　I chanced to see,at break of day,the solitary¹ child. 偶然看见了这个孤僻的孩子。

　　No mate, no comrade Lucy knew: 露西没有玩伴：

　　She dwelt on a wide moor², 她住在荒野外，

　　The sweetest thing that ever grew beside a human door! 那是她家门外最让她快乐的地方！

　　You yet may spy the fawn³ at play,the hare upon the green; 如今你可能会看见小鹿和野兔在绿草丛中玩耍，

　　But the sweet face of Lucy Gray will never more be seen. 但是你再也无法看到露西·格蕾那张甜美的脸蛋。

　　To-night will be a stormy night—you to the town must go;  今晚会有暴风雪——孩子，

　　and take a lantern, child, to light your mother through the snow. 你必须带上灯笼,照亮你妈妈雪中回家的路。

　　That, father, will I gladly do! 爸爸，我很乐意去！

　　'Tis scarcely afternoon— 现在才两点，

　　The minster clock has just struck two, 还是下午，

　　And yonder is the moon! 那边就能看到月亮了！

　　At this the father raised his hook, 她爸爸拿起吊钩，

　　And snapped a fagot-band; 勾住了绳子；

　　He plied⁴ his work;—and Lucy took 他不停地在做；

　　The lantern in her hand. 露西手里提着灯笼。

　　Not blither is the mountain roe⁵: 山上的獐安静了：

　　With many a wanton stroke 因为雪下得很大

　　Her feet disperse⁶ the powdery snow, 她抖抖脚上的雪，

　　That rises up like smoke. 雪花像烟一样飘荡。

　　The storm came on before its time: 暴风雪提前来临：

　　She wandered up and down; 露西上上下下地

　　And many a hill did Lucy climb, 爬过了很多山，

　　But never reached the town! 但就是到不了镇子！

　　The wretched parents all that night 可怜的父母一整晚

　　Went shouting far and wide; 都在四处呼喊她的名字；

　　But there was neither sound nor sight 但是没有回声

　　To serve them for a guide. 也不见身影。

　　At day-break on a hill they stood, 天亮后，他们站在小山上，

　　That overlooked the moor; 在那里能俯瞰整个荒野；

　　And thence they saw the bridge of wood 他们看见了八分之一英里外的木桥。

　　A furlong from their door.they wept, and, turning homeward, cried, 他们痛苦，回到家后，他们哭喊道，

　　In Heaven we all shall meet! 我们会在天堂一家团聚的！”

　　When in the snow the mother spied,the print of Lucy's feet! 妈妈在雪中搜寻中着女儿的足迹！

　　Then, downward from the steep hill's edge; 然后，在一座陡峭的山下；

　　They tracked the foot-marks small; 他们发现了小脚印；

　　And through the broken hawthorn⁷ hedge, 通过了山楂树林，

　　And by the long stone wall: 穿过长长的石头墙：

　　And then an open field they crossed— 然后他们穿过一片开阔地带——

　　The marks were still the same; 脚印还是一样；

　　They tracked them on, nor ever lost, 他们继续追寻，没有跟丢，

　　And to the bridge they came. 最后来到了桥边。

　　They followed from the snowy bank those foot-marks, one by one, 他们沿着白雪皑皑河岸上的脚印，

　　Into the middle of the plank⁸ 来到桥的中间

　　And further there were none! 再往前脚印就消失了！

　　Yet some maintain that to this day 有人把这些脚印留到了今天，

　　She is a living child; 她是个活泼的孩子；

　　That you may see sweet Lucy Gray 在人烟荒芜的荒野上，

　　Upon the lonesome wild. 你会看到可爱的露西·格蕾。

　　O'er rough and smooth she trips along, 她走过的路有起伏也有平坦，

　　And never looks behind; 她从未回头；

　　And sings a solitary song 她唱着一首孤独的歌，

　　That whistles in the wind. 歌声在风中飘散。

1 solitary   

adj.孤独的，独立的，荒凉的；n.隐士

2 moor

3 fawn

4 plied

5 roe

7 hawthorn   

山楂

8 plank   

n.板条，木板，政策要点，政纲条目
