The US. Defence Secretary Jim Mattis is stepping down in February, the latest in a? series of senior figures to leave the White House. In his resignation letter, Mr Mattis says he's resigning so Donald Trump¹ could appoint someone whose views align² more closely with his own. The departure comes a day after Mr Trump announced he was withdrawing troops from Syria.

Australia's cyber security adviser⁹ says it's a wakeup call for the country to lift cyber protections.
