People across the globe are welcoming the New Year. Pandemic restrictions¹ have meant limited crowds. Many people are bidding farewell to a year they would prefer to forget by watching made-for-TV fireworks displays.

China has authorized² its first homegrown COVID-19 vaccine³, adding another shot that could see wide use in poor countries as the virus surges globally.

The mayor of New York has set an ambitious goal of vaccinating⁴ one million city residents in January. The federal government had set a goal of vaccinating 20 million people across the US by today. But so far, just over two million have received the first shot.
