According to reports, a chunk¹ of ice four times size of Manhattan has broken off Pine Island Glacier² in Antarctica. Scientists, who first noticed a large rift³ in Pine Island's center last March, say that since the ice chunk was part of a glacier, it will not raise sea levels.

据报道，南极洲派恩岛冰川上脱落了一块和曼哈顿四倍大的冰块。在去年三月首先意识到派恩岛中心有一个大裂缝的科学家说，因为这个大冰块是冰川的一部分，所以它不会导致海平面上升。

However scientists add that the glacier is melting differently from other parts of Antarctica - forming cracks in its center under the ice instead of breaking apart from the sides. This unusual behavior is said to be due to warmer ocean waters and could expose ice on Antarctica that will raise sea levels if the pattern continues.
