 Down below, the lordling called out suddenly, Who goes there? 下方突然传来年轻贵族的喊叫。谁在那里？

Will heard uncertainty¹ in the challenge. He stopped climbing; he listened; he watched. 威尔在他的恫吓中听出了不安，便停止爬行，凝神谛听，仔细观察。

The woods gave answer: the rustle² of leaves, the icy rush of the stream, a distant hoot³ of a snow owl⁴. 森林给了他答案：树叶沙沙作响，寒溪潺潺脉动，远方传来雪枭的呐喊。

The Others made no sound. 异鬼无声无息地出现。

Will saw movement from the corner of his eye. Pale shapes gliding⁵ through the wood. 威尔的眼角余光瞄到白色身影穿过树林。

He turned his head, glimpsed a white shadow in the darkness. Then it was gone. 他转过头，看见黑暗中一道白影，随即又消失不见。

Branches stirred gently in the wind, scratching at one another with wooden fingers. 树枝在风中微微悸动，伸出木指彼此搔抓。

Will opened his mouth to call down a warning, and the words seemed to freeze in his throat. 威尔张口想出声警告，言语却冻结在他的喉头。

Perhaps he was wrong. Perhaps it had only been a bird, a reflection on the snow, some trick of the moonlight. 或许是看错了，或许那不过是只鸟，或是雪地上的反光，更或许是月光造成的错觉。

What had he seen, after all? 他到底看到了什么？

Will, where are you? Ser Waymar called up. 威尔，你在哪里？”威玛爵士朝上方喊，

Can you see anything? He was turning in a slow circle, suddenly wary⁶, his sword in hand. 你看到什么了吗？”他突然提高警觉，手中持剑缓缓转圈

He must have felt them, as Will felt them. There was nothing to see. Answer me! Why is it so cold?" 他一定也和威尔一样感觉到了。然而四周却空无一人。快回答我！这里为什么这么冷？”

It was cold. Shivering, Will clung more tightly to his perch⁷. 这里真的非常冷。威尔颤抖着抱紧树干，

His face pressed hard against the trunk of the sentinel. 面颊贴住哨兵树的树皮。

He could feel the sweet, sticky sap on his cheek. 黏稠而甜腻的树汁流到他脸上。

A shadow emerged from the dark of the woods. 一道阴影突然自树林暗处冒出，

It stood in front of Royce. Tall, it was, and gaunt and hard as old bones, with flesh pale as milk. 站到罗伊斯面前。它的体型十分高大，憔悴坚毅浑似枯骨，肤色苍白如同乳汁。

Its armor seemed to change color as it moved; 它的盔甲似乎会随着移动而改变颜色，

here it was white as new-fallen snow, there black as shadow, everywhere dappled with the deep grey-green of the trees. 一会儿白如新雪，一会儿黑如暗影，处处点缀着森林的深奥灰绿。

The patterns ran like moonlight on water with every step it took. 它每走一步，其上的图案便似水面上的粼粼月光般不断改变。

 

1 uncertainty   

n.易变，靠不住，不确知，不确定的事物

2 rustle   

v.沙沙作响；偷盗(牛、马等)；n.沙沙声声

3 hoot   

n.鸟叫声，汽车的喇叭声； v.使汽车鸣喇叭

• The sudden hoot of a whistle broke into my thoughts.突然响起的汽笛声打断了我的思路。
• In a string of shrill hoot of the horn sound,he quickly ran to her.在一串尖声鸣叫的喇叭声中，他快速地跑向她。

4 owl   

n.猫头鹰，枭

参考例句：

5 gliding   

v. 滑翔 adj. 滑动的

参考例句：

• Swans went gliding past. 天鹅滑行而过。
• The weather forecast has put a question mark against the chance of doing any gliding tomorrow. 天气预报对明天是否能举行滑翔表示怀疑。

6 wary   

adj.谨慎的，机警的，小心的

参考例句：

• He is wary of telling secrets to others.他谨防向他人泄露秘密。
• Paula frowned,suddenly wary.宝拉皱了皱眉头，突然警惕起来。

7 perch   

n.栖木，高位，杆；v.栖息，就位，位于

参考例句：

• The bird took its perch.鸟停歇在栖木上。
• Little birds perch themselves on the branches.小鸟儿栖歇在树枝上。
