Warren Gamaliel Harding was the 29th President of the United States, serving between 1921 and 1923. He was born in Ohio in 1865, the eldest1 of eight children. He graduated from college in 1882, aged2 17, and worked as a teacher and insurance agent. He then tried his hand at journalism3 and in 1886 he bought a failing newspaper for $300. This allowed him to make a name for himself in Ohio politics.
Harding was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1915 and served two terms until his inauguration4 as President in 1921. While in the Senate, he opposed President Wilson’s League of Nations and introduced 134 bills. Historians say he had an “unremarkable” career in the Senate. He rarely spoke5, he introduced no major bills and his attendance was “not the best”.
An Ohio admirer, Harry6 Daugherty, began to promote Harding for the 1920 Republican nomination7 because he said, "He looked like a President." He won the Republican ticket and went on to win the Presidential election by an enormous landslide8 of 60 percent of the popular vote. Harding got rid of wartime controls, slashed9 taxes, restored the high tariffs10, and tightly restricted immigration.
By 1923 the postwar depression gave way to new prosperity. Newspapers hailed Harding as a wise statesman carrying out his campaign promise of "Less government in business and more business in government." The nation’s unemployment halved11 during his administration. Despite all this, historians believe Harding is one of the worst Presidents. In 1923, he died in San Francisco of a heart attack.
