LEONARDO LEFT HIS NOTEBOOKS TO HIS FRIEND MELZI, WHO TRIED TO ORGANIZE THEM. ALL THE PAGES ON ART WERE ASSEMBLED1 AND PUBLISHED AS A BOOK. IT WAS CALLED TREATISE2 ON PAINTING. A TREATISE EXPLAINS A PERSON’S IDEAS ON A SUBJECT. SO THIS BOOK EXPLAINS LEONARDO’S IDEAS ABOUT PAINTING. FOR SOME REASON, THE BOOK WASN’T PUBLISHED UNTIL 1651, MORE THAN 130 YEARS AFTER LEONARDO’S DEATH. THE REST OF THE NOTEBOOK PAGES REMAINED UNKNOWN TO THE WORLD FOR FAR LONGER. THE SHEETS THAT WEREN’T LOST OR STOLEN OR CUT APART DIDN’T COME TO LIGHT UNTIL THE EARLY 1800S. THE MOST RECENT ONES WERE FOUND IN 1965. THEY TURNED UP IN MADRID, IN THE STACKS3 OF THE NATIONAL LIBRARY!
