Ⅰ. Transport
     装运

Transport is an important part in international business. Goods are carried by several means of conveyance -- on road or rail, by sea or air. And in recent years, combined transport which is a road-sea-rail carriage appeared.
     When goods are transported by road, rail or air, the contract of carriage takes the form of a Consignment Note(托运单) or Air Way Bill(空运提单或航空货运单). In sea transport, chartering of ships or booking shipping space is involved. And the contract entered into between the shipowner and shipper may take the form of either a Charter Party(租船契约) or a Bill of Lading(提单).
     Transport covers rather a wide range of work. In this unit only a few specimen letters pertaining to transport have been selected for preliminary study.

     Specimen Letters

1. Urging for Prompt Delivery
     催装运

(1) Dear Sirs,

     We are very anxious to know about the shipment of our Order No.123 for 1,000 cases of Tin Plates.

     As the contracted time of delivery is rapidly falling due, it is imperative that you inform us of the delivery time without any further delay. We stated explicitly at the outset the importance of punctual execution of this order and cannot help feeling surprised at your silence about our fax inquiry of the 18th June (6 days ago), a copy of which is enclosed.

     We are in urgent need of these goods and have to request you to execute the order within the time stipulated.

(2) Dear Sirs,

(Re: Contract No. W4433)

     We refer to the above contract signed between us on July 1,1998 for 6,000 long tons of wheat, which is stipulated for shipment in October, 1998. However, up till now we have not received from you any information concerning this lot. As our endusers are in urgent need of this material, we intend to send our vessel S.S. "Fengqing" to pick up the goods, which is expected to arrive at Vancouver around the end of November. You are requested to let us have your immediate reply by fax whether you are agreeable to this proposal. If not, please let us know exactly the earliest time when the goods will be ready.

     We have been put to great inconvenience by the delay in delivery. In case you should fail to effect delivery in November, we will have to lodge a claim against you for the loss and reserve the right to cancel the contract.

     We have received your fax of March 2 and noted that you have booked our Order No.123 for 4 sets of Model 790 Machine. Our confirmation of the order will be forwarded to you in a few days.

     It is of great importance to our buyers that the arrival date of this order should be arranged as early as possible to meet their requirements. So you are supposed to ship the goods by a steamer of ××× Co., the main reason is that their steamers offer the shortest time for the journey between China and Germany. We shall appreciate it if you will endeavour to ship the consignments as follows:
     Order No.123: by s.s. "×××" due to sail from Hamburg on 15/4/98 or latest by s.s "×××" due to sail from Hamburg on 25/4/98 arriving in Amoy on 30/5/98 and 15/6/98 respectively.

     With reference to the shipment of our Order No.168 for 100 cases of China Wares, we wish to draw your attention to the following: As the goods are susceptible to be broken, the wares must be packed in seaworthy cases capable of withstanding rough handling.

     Please mark the cases with our initials in a diamond, under which comes the destination with contract number and stencil conspicuously the words: "FRAGILE, HANDLE WITH CARE" on both sides of the cases.

     We trust that the above instructions are clear to you and that the shipment will give the users entire satisfaction.

3. Booking Shipping Containers
     预订船运集装箱

Dear Sirs,

     We have 50 cases of medicines and chemical reagents at the above address ready for despatch to any European Main Port, and shall be glad if you will arrange for your shipping container to collect them. Each case weighs 60 kgs.

     As our client requires us to ship the goods not later than July 15, please quote us for a shipping container from Hong Kong to the above mentioned port before that deadline.

     Your early quotation will be highly appreciated.

     Dear Sirs,

     Thank you for your enquiry of 5 June, asking us to quote shipping container to any EMP for 50 cases of medicines and chemical reagents.

     The shipping containers we provide are of two sizes, namely 10ft. and 20ft, long and built to take loads up to two to four tons respectively. They can be opened at both ends, thus making it possible to load and unload at the same time. They are both watertight and airtight and can be loaded and locked at the factory, if necessary.

     There is also a saving in freight charges when separate consignments intended for the same port of destination are carried in one container and an additional saving on insurance because of the lower premiums charged for container shipped goods.

     We enclose a copy of our tariff and look forward to receiving your instructions.

Dear Sirs,

     We regret to inform you that of the 150 cartons of Iron Nails you shipped Dubai on April 12, 20 were badly damaged, of course through no fault of yours.

     We are now writing to you in regard to the packing of these nails, which we feel necessary to clarify for our future dealings.

     The packing for Dubai is to be in wooden cases of 112 1bs net, each containing 7 1bs × 16 packets。 For Malta, we would like you to have the goods packed in double gunny bags of 50/60 kilos each. As for the British market, our buyers prefer 25-kilo cartons.

     Kindly let us know whether these requirements could be met.
