In question time the prime minister called for MP’s to watch their words on the issue, while labor³ says Malcolm Turnbull should rein⁴ in ideologues in his own party.

Former PM Tony Abbott was among those who signed the petition, despite launching the program while in office.

Fairfax editorial staff in Sydney and Melbourne will strike until Monday, after the company announced the equivalent of 120 full-time⁵ jobs will go.

The positions will be axed from the Sydney morning herald⁶, the financial review and the age in a cost-cutting exercise.

The media, entertainment and arts alliance believes the cuts amount to one-quarter of the editorial workforce⁷.
