Hong Kong's Chief Executive CY Leung is vowing1 not to resign.
"I won't resign because I must carry out the universal suffrage2 work."
In making the statement last night, Leung has defied a deadline set by the so-called Occupy protesters, who have been demanding his ouster as part of their week-long demonstrations3 in Hong Kong.
The protesters are upset with Beijing's proposals for a city-wide free vote for the Chief Executive position in 2017.
In issuing his statement last night, Leung has also appointed Chief Secretary Carrie Lam as the government representative to talk with the students participating in the demonstrations.
Leung has also praised local police for maintaining the relative peace in the city, but has warned of the consequences of an escalation4 of the protests.
"In any place in the world, if there are any protesters that surround, attack, or occupy government buildings like police headquarters or the chief executive's office ... the consequences are serious."
Thousands of protesters have been blocking major roads in several districts in Hong Kong, severely5 disrupting life in the heart of one of the world's leading financial centers.
