American defense¹ officials told NBC News an unknown number of U.S. Special Operations Forces were killed or wounded in two separate incidents in southern Afghanistan on Tuesday.

The forces were involved in a counter-terrorism operation in Helmand province when they came under attack.

Speaking on condition of anonymity³, the officials added it was not clear if the helicopter had been hit by enemy fire or whether any casualties were sustained in the landing zone.
