The US Supreme¹ Court will see a battle over patents between Samsung and Apple. The issue is not how the phones work, but how they look. Apple says Samsung copied distinctive² features of the iPhone, including its black translucent³ front screen, rectangular shape with rounded corners, and grid⁴ display of colorful icons⁵ for applications.

Two lower courts have already ruled in Apple's favor. The justices must now decide how much Samsung should pay for their infringement⁶. Should they pay an amount based on the value of the design features, or the total profit Samsung has earned from selling different versions of its smartphones? A decision is expected in late June.
