But according to contemporary Roman accounts, Pompeii is used to earth tremors¹. It's part of everyday life, rather than a cause for alarm, and so they carry on. The working day which began at sunrise is over for most. Now the city eats. The day's main meal is eaten at late afternoon. Like everything else, it's governed by class. The wealthy can eat at their homes, couches are arranged around a low table, family members recline with their invited guests. It's an elaborate affair, a key social activity. The people lower down the scale don't have kitchens or space to eat. From the sheer number of taverns² and diners in the town, it looks as if for many the norm is to eat out.
