In another moment Alice was through the glass and had jumped down into the looking-glass room.

片刻之后，爱丽丝钻入镜子，跳进了镜子屋。

At once she began looking around and noticed that several things were very different from the old room.

她马上环顾四周，注意到有好几件东西与刚才老房子的迥然相异。

The pictures on the wall all seemed to be alive, and the clock above the fireplace¹ had the face of a little old man, who smiled at her.

墙壁上的画中物都会动，活生生的，壁炉上方的闹钟像小老头的脸，向她微笑。

'This room isn't as tidy as the other one,'

“这个房间没有刚才的整洁。”

Alice thought to herself, as she noticed several chessmen on the floor by the fireplace.

爱丽丝想着，看见壁炉边地板上散落了几个棋子。

But the next moment, with a little 'Oh!' of surprise, she was down on the floor herself, watching them.

随后她发出了“哦”的一小声惊叹，她坐在了地板上看着它们。

The chessmen were walking around, arm in arm!

这些棋子儿手挽着手四处走动！

'Here are the Red King and the Red Queen²,'

“红方国王与王后都在这儿，”

Alice said, in a whisper³, in order not to frighten⁴ them.

为了不使他们害怕，爱丽丝轻声说道。

'And there are two Castles⁵ walking together. And two of the Pawns⁶, and a white Bishop⁷ reading⁸ a newspaper…

“那里还有两枚车并排走，两枚卒子，还有一枚白象在读报……

I don't think they can hear me or see me,' she went on.

我想他们既听不见我，也看不见我。”她接着说：

'I wonder-' Then something on the table behind her made a noise.

“我不清楚--” 随后，她身后的桌子上传来响声。

Alice turned to look and saw that one of the White Pawns had fallen over and begun to cry.

爱丽丝转身瞧了瞧，看见一只白卒在桌上摔了一跤，哭了起来。

She watched it with interest.

她端详着它，感到很有意思。

'It is the voice of my child!' cried the White Queen by the fireplace. 'My dear Lily! My sweet child!' and she began to climb wildly up the table leg.

白方王后站在壁炉边，叫道：“那是我孩子的哭声！我可爱的百合！我的心肝宝贝！”然后她开始拼命顺着桌腿往上爬。

Poor little Lily was now screaming⁹ loudly.

可怜的小百合这时哭喊得更响亮了。

Alice wanted to be helpful, so she picked up the Queen and put her on the table next to her noisy little daughter.

爱丽丝想帮点忙，于是她提起王后，把她放在她乱喊乱叫的小女儿旁边。

The Queen sat very still, with her mouth open, for almost a minute.

王后坐在那儿，一动不动，张着嘴，持续了大约一分钟。

Then she called down to the White King, who was still on the floor by the fireplace. 'Be careful of the storm!'

然后她对底下正纹丝不动地站在壁炉旁边的地板上的白方国王喊道：“当心风暴！”

'What storm?' said the King, looking round worriedly.

“什么风暴？”国王不安地四处环顾，问道。

'There's a terrible wind-it blew me up here in a second.

“有一阵极其猛烈的风--一眨眼功夫，就把我吹到了这儿来。

You come up the usual way, and be careful!'

你还是走原路，千万当心！”

1 fireplace
