Voters in Thailand have cast their ballots¹ in a general election blighted² by protests.

Polling in a few constituencies of the capital city and in most southern provinces was called off due to unrest caused by anti-government protesters.

But a large majority elsewhere were said to be peaceful.

The opposition³ Democrat⁴ Party has boycotted⁵ the vote.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra called the vote to head off weeks of mass protests aimed at forcing her to resign.

A suicide car bombing has hit a gas station in Lebanon's eastern town of Hermel,

leaving five people dead and 18 others injured.

The Al Nusra Front in Lebanon has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The al-Qaeda affiliated⁶ group has also claimed responsibility for a number of other recent attacks targeting Shiite populated areas in Lebanon.

Hermel, which is considered the heartland of Lebanon's Hezbollah movement,

has recently been targeted by a wave of rocket attacks from Syria.
