In a number of years, business owners in Seattle must pay their employees at least $15 bucks¹ an hour. The wage hike is championed by city council member Kshama Sawant, elected from the Socialist² Alternative Party, who says lower wages are unfair to teens and unskilled workers.

Sawant: "And so the solution to that is not to condemn⁴ them further to low wages, but actually to bring them on par³ with everyone else."

Small businesses are supposed to have seven years to phase in the higher wage, but if they're a part of a national franchise⁵, they might only have three years.
