 "My mother is a princess," answered Roland. “我妈妈是一位公主，”罗兰回答说。

Some of the people standing¹ around laughed when they heard this answer from the poorly dressed boy. 周围的一些人听到这个衣衫褴褛的男孩的回答时，都笑了。

But Charlemagne did not laugh, for Roland looked so straight and so fearlessly into his eyes that the king was sure the boy spoke² the truth. 但查理曼没有笑，因为罗兰德直视着他的眼睛，毫无畏惧，国王确信男孩说的是真话。

"Where is your mother’s castle?" he asked. “你妈妈的城堡在哪里?”国王问道。

"On the hillside not far from here," said Roland. “就在离这儿不远的山坡上。”罗兰说。

"Has your mother, the princess, servants to wait upon her, and soldiers to fight for her?" asked Charlemagne. “你的妈妈，公主，仆人侍候她，士兵为她战斗?”查理曼问道。

"My hands wait upon her, and my hands will fight for her," answered Roland. “我会亲手侍奉她、为她而战。”罗兰答道。

The king laughed and told the child to run home to his mother. 国王笑了，告诉罗兰回家去找妈妈。

Then Charlemagne rose from the table and followed Roland to his home. 然后查理曼从桌子上站起来，跟着罗兰回到了家。

The king saw the boy enter the cave and heard his happy voice as he showed his mother the food he had brought. 国王看到男孩进了山洞，听到了他高兴的声音，因为罗兰给妈妈看他带回来的食物。

When Charlemagne started to follow Roland into the cave, Bertha looked up and saw him in the doorway³. 当查理曼开始跟着罗兰走进山洞时，伯莎抬起头，看见他站在门口，

With a cry, "Charles, my brother !" 哭着说道：“查尔斯，我的兄弟!”

she ran toward⁴ him. But suddenly she stopped, and would have fallen if the king had not caught her. 她向他跑去。但她突然停了下来，如果国王没有抓住她，她就会掉下去。

As soon as she could speak, she told Roland that this was his uncle Charles, whom he had never seen. 等到开口说话时，他就告诉罗兰这是他从未见过的叔叔查尔斯。

But when Roland looked into Charlemagne's face, he knew that it was a face he had seen before. 但当罗兰看着查理曼的脸时，他知道那张脸他以前见过。

This was the man who had sat at the head of the great table. 他就是坐在大桌子前面的那个人。
