UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has welcomed the work of East African countries in peacefully resolving the ongoing1 conflict in South Sudan,
offering his "full support" to the regional efforts.
A statement issued by Ban's spokesperson says
the UN chief welcomes the outcome of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development Summit held on 27 December,
appointing a mediation2 team to work with the government of South Sudan and opposition3 in reaching a cease fire,
the release of the detainees and building toward a process of peaceful dialogue.
In the statement, Ban Ki-moon pledges the United Nations stands with the people of South Sudan
and will continue to do everything within its means to protect civilians4 at risk
and provide necessary humanitarian5 assistance.
An estimated 40,000 opposition supporters took to the streets in capital Phnom Penh Sunday afternoon
to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Hun Sen and a re-vote
following allegations of serious irregularities during the July election.
It was the 15th day of the opposition's daily protests
and was the largest-ever since the disputed July poll
because thousands of protesting garment workers, who have gone on strikes since Wednesday over low wage hike,
have also taken part in the opposition's protests.
