　　276. The Era as a Whole. 276．整个新时代

　　The years 1815-1824 have been called the Era of Good Feeling, 1815-1824年被称为"幸福时代"，

　　because there was no hard political fighting in all that time-at least not until the last year or two. 因为在这一段时间至少最后一两年没有政治斗争。

　　In 1816 Monroe was elected President without much opposition¹. 1816年门罗没有遇到多少对手就当选总统，

　　In 1820 he was reelected President without any opposition whatever. 他于1820年连任，也没有遇到多少反对者。

　　Instead of fighting over politics, 人们没有关注政治斗争，

　　the people were busily employed in bringing vast regions of the West under cultivation² and in founding great manufacturing industries in the East. 而是忙于在西部地区发展农业，忙于在东部创制大型的制造业；

　　They were also making roads and canals to connect the Western farms with the Eastern cities and factories. 人们还在西部农场与东部城市与工厂之间修路开渠。
