 　　226. Death of Washington, 1799. 226．华盛顿的去世（1799年）

　　In the midst of this excitement George Washington died. 在这个群情激昂的时期，华盛顿去世了。

　　People forgot how strongly he had taken the Federalist side in the last few years, and united to do honor to his memory. 人们并不在意他近几年怎样坚决地维护联邦党的立场，一致向他表示敬意和纪念。

　　Henry Lee spoke¹ for the nation when he declared that Washington was "first in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen." 亨利o李为全国人民说出了心声，他宣称华盛顿"是战争领袖、和平领袖，也是他同胞心中的领袖"。

　　To this day, we commemorate² Washington's birthday as we do that of no other man, though of late years we have begun to keep Lincoln's birthday also. 直至今天，尽管我们在后来的岁月也开始纪念林肯的生日，但我们用独一无二的真诚纪念华盛顿的诞辰。

　　Indeed, the election of 1800 was fought with a vigor⁴ and violence unknown before, and scarcely exceeded since. 实际上，1800年总统大选无论在投入还是争斗激烈程度上都是空前的，并且，之后的总统大选也很少有这种态势。

　　John Adams was the Federalist candidate, and he was defeated. 约翰o亚当斯是联邦党推出的候选人，但他被击败，

　　Jefferson and Burr, the Republican candidates, each received seventy-three electoral votes. 共和党的候选人杰斐逊和伯尔各得73张选举人票，

　　But which of them should be President? 但他们谁应该是当选总统？

　　The Republican voters clearly wished Jefferson to be President. 共和党的投票者显然希望杰斐逊当选，

　　But the Federalists had a majority in the House of Representatives. 但是，联邦党在众议院中有绝大多数席位，

　　They had a clear legal right to elect Burr President. 他们显然有合法的权力选举伯尔为总统，
